Disguised like wooden dolls,
the shadows wrestled on the ceiling…
Eddie Van Vleet
(Excerpt from the verse of
the Belgian poet “In a corner”)

There is no doubt that the name of Takeshi Kitano is a synonym to exotic provocation in the field of world cinema. It is understandable why the European critics called the actor and director “The new Emperor of Japanese cinema”.  With his films “Violent Cop” (1989), “A scene at the sea” (1991), “Sonatine” (1993), “Kids return” (1996), “Hana-bi” or “Fireworks” (awarded with Golden Lion in Venice), “Kikudjiro” (1999), “Brother” (2000, Japan, Great Britain) Kitano shows talent, diversity of style, queer sense of cinema language, mastered in balancing between the film aesthetics of East and West. Thrifty unobstructive directing, screen action rich in metaphors, second layers elegantly hidden in the film story, perfect editing – all of these are especially characteristic for the cinema of the Japanese. The categories of Violence, Love and Humor are the three basic story circles that build his cinematography. Naturally, the definition of the categories lacks in showing their exquisite nuancing in the screen story telling. No matter whether Kitano deals with harsh stories in “Jakudza” style, explores with remarkable sensitivity the depths of a child’s soul or seeks the answer of the eternal question “Why do we love?”. The cinema of the Japanese director should be watched and not retold.
Except for being the most media exposed personality in the Country of the rising sun, Takeshi Kitano won himself the place of being one of the most amazing, adventurous and unique cinema creators of our time.  With his last film “Dolls” (2002) he provoked and surprised again the audience as well as the critics. The following work “The Red Dream of the Dolls” studies exactly this cinema work. It deals with the place of the film in the filmography of the Japanese director and in Japanese cinema as a whole, it deals with the reaction of the critics and the personal assessment of the author on the film; it deals with the links to Japanese arts tradition – especially the bunraku theatre and the writing of Tchikamatzu Mondzaemon. As long as the film “Dolls” is strongly symbolically and culturally loaded, this text makes as well an attempt to analyze some of the leading motives in it, without any pretence for thoroughness. And last but not least, “The Red Dream of the Dolls” is dedicated to the specific cinema aesthetics and the style of Takeshi Kitano, without going too deeply into the professional cinema terminology.
